Most experts didn’t give the Chicago Bears much of a chance to make the playoffs in 2020. Through five games, Chicago stands tall at 4-1, and Da Bears are starting to gain some respect.
There were plenty of question marks surrounding this team in the preseason, and some of these questions still remain. However, a Week 5 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should put the rest of the league on notice.
The “Monsters of the Midway” aren’t here to simply make the playoffs in 2020, this team is looking to go all the way. Here are five reasons why the Chicago Bears will win the Super Bowl this season.
1. Terrific Pass Rush
The old adage says that “Defense Wins Championships”, and so why not start this article out by focusing on that side of the football. The entire defense has played well for the Chicago Bears, but the front seven has been the most dominant unit on the team.
Linebacker Khalil Mack and defensive end Akiem Hicks have combined for seven sacks through five games, and they are a nightmare for opposing offenses. There aren’t many offensive lines in football that can handle the Bears pass rush when both players are attacking the quarterback.
Mack hits defenders with a variety of moves from the outside, and his speed and strength is unmatched in the NFL. Hicks is a huge man that clogs up the middle, but he can also move for a big guy.
Players like Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn can also get to the quarterback, and the Bears pass rush can be scary when everyone is healthy.
2. Talented Secondary
The NFL has turned into a pass-happy league, and there aren’t many defenses that are built to stop the pass. That’s not the case for the Bears as the secondary is filled with talented defensive backs.
Cornerback Kyle Fuller is a two-time Pro Bowler, and he is capable of shutting down the best receivers in the game. Fuller can also lay some lumber, as Ke’Shawn Vaughn found out on Thursday night in Week 5.
Safety Eddie Jackson is a ball hawk, that has a reputation around the league to turn interceptions into points. Finally, rookie cornerback Jaylen Johnson has been better than advertised, already making a pair of game-saving plays.
If the defensive line doesn’t shut down the passing game, the secondary will.
3. Experienced QB
In 2018, the Bears entered the playoffs with a young Mitchell Trubisky at quarterback. Trubisky actually played well in the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but the Bears weren’t going to go far with him under center.
Now that the Bears have turned to Nick Foles, it gives them plenty of hope to make a deep playoff run this season. Foles was actually on the other side of the field in 2018 and played a huge role in the Bears being sent home in that game.
Foles would later become MVP of the Super Bowl that season, so it’s clear that he has what it takes to win the big game. The Bears don’t need Foles to be dominant to make a deep playoff run, but he won’t make costly mistakes.
The quarterback position in Chicago has been a revolving door since Jim McMahon, but Foles is the guy to deliver the Bears their next Super Bowl.
4. Wide Open NFC
The AFC has two dominant teams, Baltimore and Kansas City, but that’s not the case in the NFC. Sure the Green Bay Packers are off to a 4-0 start, but there are plenty of question marks surrounding that team.
Da Bears just knocked off one of the favorites to win the NFC by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5, and the sky is the limit for this team. The NFC is there for the taking this season, and the Bears will be able to navigate through the playoffs this time around.
5. Bears are Due
Finally, the Chicago Bears are due to win another Super Bowl, it’s just time. It’s been a long time since the 1985 Chicago Bears shuffled their way to a Super Bowl victory.
Da Bears are one of the oldest franchises in the league, and it just doesn’t feel right to have them suffer through this long of a playoff drought. 2020 has been a crazy year, so capping it off with a Bears Super Bowl win just feels right.
