The 125th installment of “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” is coming up Saturday night so we have an Auburn vs Georgia betting preview for you. This game is massive for both of these top 10 teams and is no question the game to watch this week in college football.
Considering the unusual offseason and truncated 2020 schedule, the stakes are even higher for this classic rivalry game. Both teams are coming off of wins last week and are led by their strong defenses.
The players will have to bring their best game to this one, so expect a battle with a playoff-like atmosphere this Saturday night.
How Auburn Can Shock The Bulldogs at Home
The Tigers’ new offensive coordinator, Chad Morris, has appeared to do wonders to help quarterback Bo Nix after a hit-or-miss freshman season. Nix looked comfortable in the win over Kentucky, completing 16 of 27 for 233 yards and three touchdowns.
The sophomore has plenty of weapons around him, most notably wide receiver Seth Williams, who had two touchdown catches last week. However, throwing against Georgia’s secondary will be a much greater challenge.
The Bulldogs have arguably the best defense in the SEC, with immense talent in the secondary in particular. Nix will have to be in peak form to move the ball down the field.
Auburn’s rushing attack has been lackluster, so expect Georgia to game plan for the pass and bring plenty of pressure against a weak Auburn offensive line. If the Tigers wish to pull off this upset, they will have to rely on their strong defense as well to keep the score low, and get Nix into a rhythm with his dangerous wide receivers.
How Georgia Can Make A Statement to the SEC
Georgia’s offense certainly has its fair share of question marks. Former walk-on quarterback Stetson Bennett played well in last Saturday’s victory and is likely to get the starting job against Auburn.
Although, with JT Daniels returning from injury, if we see Bennett struggle at first, there might be yet another switch at quarterback for the Bulldogs. Regardless of which quarterback is out there on Saturday, Georgia’s offensive line has to play up to par. Its quarterbacks were sacked three times, and the running game only churned out 121 yards total last week.
Much like The Tigers, the Bulldogs will have trouble moving the ball on offense if their quarterback cannot get into a groove. Georgia has the better defense and has home-field advantage in this game, but these two teams are evenly matched in many ways.
A win in this game would likely mean a solid top four ranking for the remainder of the year for the Bulldogs, barring any ridiculous upsets to lower-ranked teams.
Auburn vs Georgia Betting Preview and Picks
The Bulldogs are favored by 6.5 points (-110) in this game, and the over/under is set at a very low 44.5 (-110). Georgia has won six out of the last seven in this series.
Even with Auburn hungry for a win against its deep south rival, I’m taking the Bulldogs to win and cover the spread. Their offense came to life in a big way in the second half of the Arkansas game, and I believe they can carry that momentum into this game even against a stout Auburn defense.
The over/under here is the real intriguing bet to me here, as 44.5 is super low for two top 10 teams. But with this game looking like a defensive battle, I can see why it would be this way.
Regardless, I will be taking the over in this one. I don’t think it will win by much, but there’s a pick-six waiting to happen in this game, and I believe that will be the reason this game goes over. I’m predicting the final score to be Georgia 28, Auburn 20.
The Pick: Georgia (-6.5)
